All questions about jewellery appraisals answered here

How do you know which gems are real and which are fakes?

We’re a team of trained gemologist and jewellery appraisers with certifications from the Canadian Gemological Association and the Gem-A British Gemological Association. We’re trained in using a vast variety of advanced equipment, industry knowledge, and non-destructive tests to determine the species and value of your gems.

Do you do on-site appraisals?

Yes. However, there are specific requirements that must be met before we can perform an on-site or in-home jewellery appraisal for you. For example, the collection should be large enough, and we need to discuss all items beforehand to ensure success.

I have a large jewellery collection. How should I appraise it?

If your jewellery or gem collection is particularly large, it’s best to contact us ahead of time. We can discuss which items should and shouldn’t be included or how you should segment it to ensure you get the best value for your collection.

How are your jewellery appraisals different from others?

Unlike most jewellery appraisal services or that only consider your peices’ gold purity and weight, we provide you a comprehensive valuation that accounts for every aspect of your precious collection. We’re passionate gemstone evaluators, so we consider gemstones, craftsmanship, market demand, and precious metals all together. This gives you a clearer idea of what might sell, how quickly it could sell, or how much you’ll need for insurance coverage.

How much do you charge for appraisals?

We generally charge $30 per hour, with a minimum of one hour. If you have a larger collection, we may need to provide a custom quote instead of working strictly by the hour.

I heard gold and rubies have increased in value. Can you give me an updated price for my jewellery collection?

Yes, of course. Metal and gemstone prices fluctuate, so you can contact us anytime for an updated valuation. If we’ve previously reviewed your collection, we offer updated valuations for a flat rate of $100.

What tools are you using to appraise my jewellery?

We have an extensive laboratory that helps us uncover your jewellery’s true composition and value. Some of the tools we use include:
Microscopes
Refractometer
Spectroscope
Acid tests (when allowed and always with your permission)
Precious metal testing instruments
Dichroscopes
Light filters
Magnification lenses
Rare earth magnets
High-precision scales
Shortwave (SW) and Longwave (LW) UV lights

Do you appraise loose gemstones?

Yes. We’ve been appraising faceted loose gemstones for over five years. Our pricing for loose gemstone appraisals depends on how many stones you have, as additional stones require more time to test and measure. That said, we provide detailed appraisals of your loose gems based on testing and current market demand.

I don’t know what’s inside my brooch. Do you do gemstone identification?

Yes, we certainly do! Many clients inherit precious jewellery or family heirlooms and aren’t sure of the gem species, origin, or value. We remove the guesswork by identifying the gemstone in your piece and providing its value.

How accurate are your gemstone appraisals price-wise?

Gemstone values can vary among different buyers and can change due to factors like political climate, mining scarcity, and market demand. We do our best to consider these influences and provide you with the most accurate evaluation and appraisal possible.
